About occupational therapy

What Occupational Therapy Is

Occupational therapy helps you do the everyday things you need and want to do, like getting dressed, cooking, writing, working, or caring for your family. Physical therapy focuses on how you move. Occupational therapy focuses on the tasks you move for.

Your occupational therapist looks at what is making those tasks hard, whether that is weak or painful hands, stiff joints, low stamina, or a long-term health condition. Then she builds a plan to improve your strength and skills and shows you new ways to get things done. Samantha works with patients of all ages, from children to older adults.

Occupational Therapy FAQ

Still have a question? Call us and a member of our team will help.

What is the difference between occupational therapy and physical therapy?

They often overlap. Physical therapy focuses more on movement, like walking, bending, and lifting. Occupational therapy focuses on the everyday tasks you use that movement for, especially with your hands and arms, like dressing, cooking, and writing.

Who is occupational therapy for?

People of all ages, from children to older adults. It can help after an injury or surgery, with arthritis or another long-term condition, or any time daily tasks have become hard to do on your own.

What happens at my first visit?

Samantha asks about your pain, your health history, and which daily tasks are hard for you. She checks your strength and joint motion, then works with you to set goals and a plan.

Will I get exercises to do at home?

Yes. Samantha gives you a home program that fits your routine and updates it as you improve, so the work you do in the office carries over into daily life.

Can I have occupational therapy and physical therapy at the same time?

Yes. Both are in the same office, so your therapists can talk to each other and work toward the same goals.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. We accept most major plans, including Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare, and we verify your benefits before your first visit. Call (908) 282-3737 and we will check your coverage.
