About acupuncture

What Acupuncture Is

Acupuncture is a treatment in which very thin needles are placed at specific points on the body. It is a drug-free option for pain in the back, neck, and joints, and people also use it to help with stress and tension.

Acupuncture is an ancient practice. Today it is thought to work in part by stimulating the nervous system, which helps the body release its own natural pain-relieving chemicals. You can use it on its own or together with other care, and here your acupuncturist works in the same office as your physical therapist, chiropractor, and pain physician.

What Happens During Acupuncture

Each session is planned for you. Your care may include:

Thin-needle acupuncture

Very thin needles placed at points chosen for your concern. They stay in for about 20 to 30 minutes while you rest.

Hands-on exam

Before treatment, your acupuncturist feels the soft tissues and checks how you move to find where pain and tension are coming from.

Cupping

Small cups placed on the skin create gentle suction on the muscles underneath. It may be added to your session when it fits your plan.

Self-care guidance

Simple wellness tips to use between visits, and a self-care plan to take with you when you finish treatment.

Acupuncture FAQ

Still have a question? Call us and a member of our team will help.

How long is an acupuncture session?

The needles stay in for about 20 to 30 minutes. Your first visit takes longer, because Kathleen starts with a talk about your health and a short exam.

What is cupping?

Cupping uses small cups placed on the skin to create gentle suction on the muscles underneath. Kathleen may add it to your session when it fits your plan.

Is acupuncture only for pain?

No. Many people come in for back, neck, or joint pain, but acupuncture is also used to help with stress and tension. Tell Kathleen what you are dealing with and she will let you know if it is a good fit.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your concern and how you respond. Kathleen checks your progress along the way and adjusts your plan, and visits become less frequent as you improve.

Can I get acupuncture along with physical therapy or chiropractic care?

Yes. Acupuncture can be used on its own or with other care. Your acupuncturist, physical therapists, and chiropractor all work in the same office, so your visits can be planned together.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. We accept most major plans, including Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare, and we verify your benefits before your first visit. Call (908) 282-3737 and we will check your coverage.
