What Might Be Causing Your Hip Pain

Pain in the hip can come from the joint itself, the tissues around it, or somewhere else entirely. Your evaluation is how we find out which one applies to you.

01

Osteoarthritis

What it feels like
Deep groin pain and morning stiffness from gradual wear of the joint cartilage, which often eases once you get moving.
How we help
Joint mobilization to restore motion, plus strengthening that helps the muscles around the hip share the load.

02

Bursitis

What it feels like
Tenderness over the bone on the outside of the hip and pain when you lie on that side.
How we help
Calming the irritated area, changing sleep and sitting positions, and building up the side hip muscles over time.
03

Tendinopathy

What it feels like
An ache in the gluteal or hip flexor tendons with stairs, hills, or standing on one leg, often after a change in activity.
How we help
A gradual loading program that rebuilds tendon strength, with hands-on care to ease pain along the way.
04

Labral tears

What it feels like
Catching, clicking, or a pinching feeling at the front of the hip from damage to the cartilage rim around the socket.
How we help
Movement changes that avoid pinching positions and strengthening that keeps the joint steady. If you need a surgical opinion, we help set that up.
05

Referred pain from the back

What it feels like
Pain felt in the hip that actually starts in the lower back or sacroiliac joint. Treating only the hip tends to give short-lived relief.
How we help
We assess your back and pelvis along with your hip, then treat the true source with therapy and chiropractic care.

06

Muscle strain

What it feels like
Soreness in the hip flexors, inner thigh, or glutes after a sudden movement or a jump in training, painful to stretch and to use.
How we help
Soft tissue work, then a step-by-step return to strength and activity so the muscle is ready for your sport or routine.

Hip Pain FAQ

Still have a question? Call us and a member of our team will help.

Do I need a referral to be seen for hip pain?

New Jersey allows direct access to physical therapy, so in many cases you can book an evaluation without a referral. Some insurance plans still require one for coverage, so call us and we will check your plan before your visit.

Should I rest my hip or keep moving?

Complete rest is rarely the answer for a hip. The better question is which movements to keep and which to change while things settle down. We work that out with you at your evaluation.

Will I need surgery for my hip?

Many people with hip pain are treated without surgery. We start with conservative care. If your imaging or your response to treatment suggests you should see a surgeon, we will tell you and help coordinate that step.

Why do you check my back if my hip hurts?

Pain felt in the hip can start in the lower back or sacroiliac joint. If we only treated the hip, relief might not last. Checking your back and pelvis helps us treat the right spot the first time.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. We accept most major plans, including Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare, and we verify your benefits before your first visit. Call (908) 282-3737 and we will check your coverage.
